Summer Term message from Mrs Eaves:
Welcome back after the holidays! I hope you all had a wonderful break, spending time with your family and friends after working so hard. I can't believe we have reached the last full term of Year One! We are really looking forward to be doing lots of new learning in the summer term.
- Throughout our Maths learning journey in Year 1, it is important that we become confident with the number bonds to 10, and counting forwards and backwards up to 100. We are continuing to practise times tables by chanting our 2's, 5's and 10's. Don't forget Numbots are accessible on any device and will really support fluency with times tables and number facts. I wonder if any Year 1s will win a certificate for Numbots this term! Our focuses in Maths for this term will be Fractions, Time, Multiplication and Division. Have a go at telling the time using an analogue clock - what time is it now?
- In Science we will be learning about Plant Parts. Your child will learn that plants are living things that grow from seeds or bulbs. They will revisit the concept of seasonal change, observing how trees and other plants change with the seasons, particularly from winter to spring. Your child will observe, photograph and identify various plants growing in and around the school grounds. They will choose one plant they would like to study for the project's duration. They will continue their learning by learning the parts of plants. They will explore where new plants come from and learn the names of some plants that grow from seeds and bulbs. Your child will learn about the parts of leaves, making comparisons. They will ask and answer scientific questions about the importance of plants to animals, including humans. They will observe how their chosen plant has changed over time and record their findings.
- In DT, Chop, Slice and Mash children will learn about sources of food and the preparatory skills of peeling, tearing, slicing, chopping, mashing and grating. They will use this knowledge and techniques to design and make a supermarket sandwich according to specific design criteria.
In History, the School Days project, your child will have the opportunity to take part in a traditional Victorian class and will learn about the differences between schooling in the Victorian era and schooling today. They will learn about objects found in a Victorian classroom and how they were used. They will research Samuel Wilderspin, an important figure in the development of schooling for young children in the Victorian era, whose ideals are reflected in schooling today. They will learn to describe the passage of time through study of past, present and future tense vocabulary.
- We will continue with our daily Phonics and The Phonics Screener Check will take place week commencing 9th June! Please continue to practice to read the real and pseudo words sent home every week.
- We will continue with our weekly spelling test, and we will read books by the author Beatrix Potter. There is a link to the Year 1 Common Exception Words below. These are words that all children are expected to be able to spell by the end of Year 1. It is important that we practise spelling these words, as they are commonly spelt incorrectly meaning that we may find them a little bit trickier to remember. How many can you already spell?
-
Our Summer Term Learning Letter, spellings and knowledge organisers are also linked below. These detail everything we are going to be learning about this term. Please take a look so you know exactly what we will be exploring.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask - I am always happy to help!

Beach visit

What a wonderful morning at the beach. We looked at the human and physical features and the children wrote messages in the sand, just like in the story Stanley’s Stick! They collected shells and built sand castles, and had an ice cream to finish off our trip. Fabulous!
